(Anti)Social Networking

I’ve never been a really huge follower of the “Social Networking” craze. Truth be told, I’m not really a social person. I like to keep my head down. My husband half-jokes that if I didn’t have him and the kids I’d be a recluse that never saw a real person and I’d spend all my waking hours in front of a computer.

As I try to build a career out of my work on the web I need to get to know people. I’m really trying, now, to get involved in some of the networking opportunities available through “Web 2.0″ sites. I’ve set up accounts on several sites but I’m still working out how to implement them into my daily life in a way that is useful. I’m just not a chatty person. I will NEVER tweet every move I make on twitter. But if I can use Twitter as a way to keep people informed about useful information then that can work.

Here are some places you *might* find me as I get this all sorted out.

I am sure I’ve signed up for others but they are slipping my mind at the moment. I don’t guarantee I’ll keep up with most of these and some may prove pointless for my purposes. Time will tell!

Oh boy, can I relate to this sentiment. I feel like there are bits and pieces of me sprinkled all over the web at this point and I’ve never been particularly happy with my current blog presence (two blogs, both half dead).

I am really enjoying twitter right now, but I would also like to figure out a why to be more coherent with my online persona and maintain some privacy for my family. Is that even possible? We’ll see. Thanks for the twitter invite.

Do you feel that you’ve gotten the “hang” of Twitter at this point (now that it’s nearly two months since you first wrote this) and if so, what do you find the benefits of it to be?

And I’m with you on being a recluse. If it wasn’t for the hubby and kids, I’d probably never talk face to face with another living human being. Well, not most days anyway. :)

Hi Wendy,
Twitter is the one service on that list that I’ve actually kept up with. In face I now have over 300 followers and I’m following about 700. I don’t read everything that everyone writes but it is really great for building a network.

I found a lot of the people I follow here: http://www.sparkplugging.com/sparkplug-ceo/the-ultimate-list-of-moms-on-twitter/
I went a little crazy and went through the whole list and all th comments plus subscribed to get emails as new comments are added.

The main benefits of Twitter for me are that I can just have a place to vent(but remember this is totally public) and also I can start to market myself, my services, and my websites. I fully intend to build a career online. Ultimately you get out of it what you put into it and it depends on what your purpose is. I like both the networking and the relational aspects so it works quite well for me.

Thanks for asking!

Hi Daisy,

I’d like to add you on LinkedIn. But I can’t, since I’m not in your direct network. Could you perhaps add me?

Hi Daisy,

I’m also introverted and anti-social. Only in the last couple of months have I seen the value of social networking sites. My favorite right now is Twitter. When I first signed up for it, I didn’t get it at all and ignored it for a couple of months. While it is a great networking and blog promotion tool, I also find that who you follow is very important - by following leaders in the tech and blogging community there is so much that can be learned. I really hope Twitter works out it’s problems - it’s been frustrating to use it recently and I would really miss it if it was gone - it is SO addicting.

I have profiles scattered all over the web and find it difficult to keep up with all of them. My favorites right now, other than twitter, and the one’s I’ve been using the longest - flickr and last fm. I recently started fully using google reader for rss feeds and I really like the shared items option. I am late in joining facebook and so far I don’t care for it - there’s too much there and I think the site is too slow to make using it enjoyable. I also use friendfeed but I have mixed feelings about it - I like seeing what other’s are sharing and linking to but the interface is limiting and there is just too much going on to keep up with it.

Anyway, enough of my rambles. Thanks for the post.
